New PhD Project Explores Biodiversity in Construction Supply Chains

We’re proud to support Anna Rex Elmgren, who is starting up a PhD project in collaboration with Upstream Partners, NCC and the University of Southern Denmark. The project will be supervised by Professor Carsten Rahbek, and is funded by Upstream Partners, NCC, Innovation Fund Denmark and Realdania.

The research investigates how construction supply chains impact biodiversity using procurement data from NCC and high-resolution global biodiversity datasets. The project will map supply chains, assess off-site biodiversity impact, and develop practical recommendations so actors in the construction industry can reduce their contribution to nature loss. The aim is to provide the construction industry with a clearer understanding of its footprint — and to contribute to more nature-positive decision-making.

“The ambition is that all actors in the construction value chain are given the right tools to take responsibility and collaborate to reduce the impact on nature – and, not least, that we begin to quantify and take action on the biodiversity crisis.”  Anna Rex Elmgren

REGENERATIVE HOSPITALITY / TOURISM

stealth company shows a new path for hospitality to become nature-positive

A yet to be born hospitality brand is taking a new approach to transformative stays and regenerative hospitality. A business practice where lodges are renovated, built and operated in the most possible sustainable and nature-positive way, and where a share of profit are donated to local nature restoration projects – is the DNA of a new lodge concept.

Upstream Partners has been supporting the client, investor SeedALFA, with consultancy on location selection, country analyses, feasibility studies, business planning, negotiation, impact assessments, financial models, etc. The first lodge project is expected to be launched in 2025.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT / CONSTRUCTION

Can Denmark adapt the Biodiversity Net Gain scheme?

In the UK, the Biodiversity Net Gain scheme has been made mandatory in 2024, supporting a nature-positive practice to urban development and construction. What are the learnings from the UK, is the BNG scheme a relevant to adapt and what does it take?

This is what Upstream Partners are finding the answers to in a new report and policy paper to be published in 2024. The report will build on data and insights from the UK, provided by the Green Finance Institute, as well as interviews with key stakeholders in Denmark and an analysis of the Danish legal, business and financial landscape.
